8. Eyes Closed RestEC23 min
Approx. 30 minutes recording time, including instructions

Eyes Closed Rest: Instruct subject to keep eyes closed, do not sleep, do not think about one's day or make plans, simply keep one's mind blank for 3 minutes.

Eyes Open Rest: Instruct subject to keep eyes open, stare at boring scene (wall, blank monitor). Do not think about one's day or make plans, simply view (boring) stimulus for 3 min.

Reading Task (Low Challenge Condition): Instruct subject to read passage carefully and silently and to inform you (investigator) if they finish the passage before time is up. Stop EEG recording immediately if this occurs; else interrupt reading when 3 min pass. Now instruct subject to describe what they read. Inaccurate passage summarization may indicate non-compliance or inappropriate reading level.

Math Task (High Challenge Condition): Instruct subject to work as accurately as possible to solve in order all math problems. If they complete all problems before time is up (unlikely), stop EEG recording immediately. If test is completed well before 3 minutes, repeat task with a more challenging test. For all subjects, review subject's answers to determine compliance; accuracy below 25% suggests non-compliance.

Task Replication Selection: If previous math test proved too difficult or passage was above subject's reading level, choose easier version (or #2 for easiest level). If test is reasonably difficult or passage at or below reading level, choose harder version (or #2 for hardest level).

Non-compliance: Repeat any condition in which the subject did not follow instructions. Do not include non-compliant files in data set.

LOW AND HIGH CHALLENGE TASKS

3Medium Medium for older children/capable subjects
4Medium Medium for older children/capable subjects (similar to original math test)
5Harder Harder for high schoolers/most capable subjects
6Hardest, 2 Hardest, 2 for high schoolers/most capable subjects
